This is the most beautiful story. I never had the joy of meeting Marlena, but always loved her warm, wonderful and supportive presence on social media. She will be missed. May her memory be a blessing, and much love to her family. x

She will be missed. I read her in the SF Chronicle Food section when it was still one of the best in the country and was so glad to catch up to her again on social media.

May all who love Marlena come to a place of peace as they journey through grief

Hello. Marlena was my good friend in junior high and high school, in Sacramento. We kept up since, but occasionally, loosely. Could the person who posted the announcement please send me Alan's home address, as offered? Thank you. (I know Alan.)

In addition to her lovely and thoughtful writing, Marlena gave us the gift an entire cookbook on Macaroni and Cheese and for that, I am forever grateful.

Oh my heart I am so sorry to hear this. I followed her way back in the day when I was a grad student at UC Davis, astonished by the California produce. May her memory be a blessing.

Marlena graciously welcomed me as a Facebook friend after I gushed at her regarding her Chronicle career. We never actually corresponded, but she did "like" many of my Jewish and gastronomic posts. She was unselfconsciously "her," artlessly artful, and a terrific writer. As others have said and will say, she will be dearly missed.
