This photo was taken my Swedish friend and colleague, Ulrica Soderlind, as we were gathered around the table at the Umea Food Symposium and Gourmand Awards, in Sweden’s Arctic Circle. I don’t think I even posed or said cheese, we were just sitting there rehashing the world of food and the food of the world and i didnt’ even notice the click. Several months later, looking for a photo, she sent me this, this wonderful one. To me it encapsulates so much about enjoying and communicating about food: simply being there, and noticing, enjoying and communicating this.

Often I feel as if no one is paying attention, so it means even more, when this honour comes from out of the blue, telling me: we have seen your many many books, and they are amazing, and we want to recognize you.
